Choosing a husband or wife is one of the biggest decisions you will make in your life. While attraction and shared interests can be important, a successful marriage is built on much deeper foundations. When looking for a Muslim spouse, it is worth asking not only, “Do I like this person?”, but also: “What kind of person are they?”
Their character, values, faith and approach to life can tell you much more about the kind of marriage you may build together. Here are some of the most important qualities to look for in a potential spouse.
1. Good Character #
Good character should be high on your list when considering someone for marriage. Look at how they treat people when they have nothing to gain from them. Are they polite to others? Are they honest? Do they show kindness? Can they admit when they are wrong? First impressions can be misleading, but character tends to reveal itself over time.
A person who consistently treats others with respect is more likely to bring those qualities into their marriage too.
2. Faith and Commitment to Islam #
For many Muslims, shared faith is one of the foundations of marriage. You may want to consider how the person practises their deen and what role Islam plays in their everyday life. This is not about searching for someone who never makes mistakes. Rather, look for someone who takes their faith seriously and wants to continue growing. You might ask yourself:
• Do they value their relationship with Allah? • Do they make an effort to practise Islam? • Do they want Islam to be part of their family life? • Are they open to learning and improving? A shared commitment to faith can provide an important foundation throughout married life. 3. Honesty Trust is essential in a marriage, and honesty is one of the foundations of trust.
A potential spouse should be someone you feel you can communicate with openly. This includes being honest about important matters such as family, finances, work, expectations and previous commitments. Nobody is expected to share everything immediately. However, deliberately hiding important information can create serious problems later.
4. Emotional Maturity #
Marriage requires the ability to handle emotions responsibly. Look for someone who can communicate when they are upset rather than simply shutting down or becoming aggressive. Can they listen when you disagree? Can they apologise? Can they accept constructive criticism? Can they talk through a problem without turning every disagreement into a personal attack?
Emotional maturity does not mean someone never becomes angry or upset. It means they understand how to handle those emotions in a healthy and respectful way.
5. Kindness and Compassion #
Kindness can sometimes be overlooked when people focus on more obvious qualities. Yet small acts of kindness can become extremely important in everyday married life. How does the person respond when someone is struggling? Are they considerate of other people’s feelings? Do they show compassion towards family, friends and strangers?
Marriage involves countless ordinary moments. Having a spouse who is genuinely kind can make those moments much more meaningful. 6. Responsibility A responsible person understands that their decisions affect other people. Look at how they manage their commitments.
Do they turn up when they say they will? Do they take their work and responsibilities seriously? Do they manage their finances sensibly? Do they take responsibility for mistakes rather than blaming everyone else? Marriage brings shared responsibilities, so reliability matters. 7. Respect A healthy marriage requires mutual respect.
A potential spouse should respect your opinions, boundaries, ambitions and individuality. Pay attention to how they respond when you disagree with them. Someone who respects you only when you agree with them may struggle to maintain that respect during the challenges of marriage.
Respect should extend beyond the two of you as well. How someone speaks about people they disagree with can reveal a great deal about their character.
8. Communication Skills #
You do not need to marry someone who is naturally talkative. However, communication is important. You should be able to discuss difficult subjects, express concerns and ask questions without feeling that every conversation will become an argument. Good communication also means listening.
A spouse who genuinely listens to understand rather than simply waiting for their turn to speak can help create a much healthier relationship. 9. Patience Every marriage will have challenging moments. There will be misunderstandings, stressful days, financial pressures, family situations and times when you simply see things differently.
Patience can help couples navigate these situations without allowing temporary difficulties to damage the relationship. Consider how the person behaves when things do not go according to plan. Do they become easily frustrated with everyone around them, or can they remain calm and work towards a solution? 10. Humility Nobody gets everything right.
A good spouse should be able to recognise their own mistakes and accept that they still have things to learn. Humility allows people to say: “I was wrong.” “I’m sorry.” “I hadn’t thought about it that way.” Those simple words can be incredibly valuable in a marriage.
11. Shared Values #
You can have different personalities, interests and hobbies and still have a strong marriage. However, major differences in your fundamental values can create challenges. Discuss the things that matter most to both of you. For example: • What does family mean to you? • What are your expectations around children? • Where would you like to live? • What are your career ambitions?
• How do you view finances? • What role should extended family have? • What kind of Islamic environment would you like to create at home? These conversations help you understand whether you are moving in the same direction.
12. A Willingness to Grow #
Marriage does not mean that either person stops developing. Life changes. People change. Circumstances change. Look for someone who is willing to learn, improve and work on themselves. More importantly, look for someone who is willing to work on the marriage when difficulties arise.
A strong marriage is not one where nothing ever goes wrong. It is one where both people are willing to face problems together.
Look Beyond the First Impression
When meeting someone for the first time, it is natural to focus on appearance, confidence and conversation. But a first impression only tells you so much. As you get to know someone, look for consistency. Does their behaviour match what they say? Do they treat people well when nobody is watching? Do their actions reflect their values?
Do they make you feel respected and comfortable expressing yourself? These observations can be more valuable than a perfect first meeting.
Don’t Expect Someone to Be Perfect
It is important to have standards, but there is a difference between having healthy standards and expecting perfection. Every person has weaknesses. You are not looking for someone who has never made a mistake. You are looking for someone whose character and values are compatible with yours and who is willing to grow. The same standard should apply to yourself.
Instead of asking only, “What qualities do I want in a spouse?”, ask: “What kind of spouse am I preparing myself to become?” That question can change the entire way you approach marriage.
Choosing With Both Your Heart and Your Mind
Marriage involves emotion, but it also requires wisdom. Attraction can bring two people together, but character, faith, trust, respect and compatibility help build something that can last. Take the time to get to know a potential spouse properly. Ask meaningful questions. Look at their actions as well as their words. Seek advice from people you trust and make sincere dua throughout the process.
You do not need to find a perfect person. You need to find someone with whom you can build a marriage based on faith, respect, compassion and mutual commitment. And as you search for those qualities in someone else, remember to develop them within yourself too.
