This policy explains what we collect when you apply to an event, why we hold it, who sees it, and what you can ask us to do with it.

Who we are

Muslim Matchmaking Event runs matchmaking events for Muslims in England. We are the data controller for the information described below. To reach us about anything in this policy, email muslimmatchmakingevent@gmail.com, call +44 7348 948907, or use our contact page.

What we collect, and why

When you apply to an event, the form asks for the following. We collect it to assess your application and to match you with other applicants – that is the only reason any of it is asked for.

Identity and contact

Your name, email address, phone number and WhatsApp number if you give one, your age and your gender.

Background

Your nationality, your ethnicity, and the city you live in. Your city is also used to work out approximate distance between applicants, so that matching can take travel into account.

Religious practice

Your level of practice, your prayer commitment, whether you wear hijab, whether you are a revert, and anything you write about your values. This is special category data under UK data protection law. We ask for it because compatibility of practice is central to what these events are for, and we process it on the basis of your explicit consent, given when you submit the form. You can withdraw that consent at any time.

Education and work

Your highest level of education, your profession, your industry and your employment status.

What you are looking for

Your preferred age range, any preference on ethnicity or profession, your view on children, whether you would like to bring a guardian, and any notes you add for the team.

Your account

Applying creates an account on this website using your email address and the password you choose, so that you can sign in and see your applications. We store the password only as a cryptographic hash – we cannot read it.

If you take part in a private meeting

Where a private meeting is arranged, we hold the times you offered or chose, and any photograph you upload for that purpose. A photograph is only ever shared with the other party after you have been asked and have agreed.

Technical information

Our host keeps standard server logs, and this site sets cookies needed to keep you signed in.

Who sees it

Your application is read by the team that reviews applications and runs the matching. Other guests never see your form. What another guest knows about you at an event is what you choose to tell them, plus the fact that you were matched.

We use a small number of service providers who process data on our behalf: our web host, which stores the site and its database; our email provider, which delivers the messages we send you; and, where an online event or private meeting is arranged, a video meeting provider. Where a payment is taken, it is handled by a payment provider – card details are entered on their systems and never reach ours.

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for advertising.

How long we keep it

We keep your application and account so that you do not have to fill the form in again for the next event, and so that matching can take into account who you have already met.

We also use your registration details to tell you about future events – new dates, other cities, and events that look suited to what you told us you are looking for. You can ask us to stop sending those at any time and we will, while still sending you the messages that relate to a booking you have made.

If you ask us to delete your information, we will.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:

• give you a copy of the information we hold about you;
• correct anything that is wrong;
• delete your information;
• stop or restrict what we do with it;
• withdraw the consent you gave for us to process information about your religious practice.

Ask through our contact page and we will act on it. If you are not satisfied with how we have handled a request, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Keeping it safe

The site runs over an encrypted connection, access to applications is limited to the people who review them, and passwords are stored hashed. No system is perfect, and we will tell you promptly if something happens that affects your information.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects you, we will say so on this page.
