Revert events

Revert and new Muslim matchmaking events

For Muslims who came to Islam themselves, and for born Muslims who are genuinely open to marrying one. No family network to make the introduction, and no assumption that you should have had one.

The gap nobody designs for

Most routes to marriage in the Muslim community run through family. An aunt suggests someone. A brother knows a family. A mosque committee makes a quiet introduction because they have known both households for twenty years.

If you took your shahada three years ago, none of that machinery exists for you. The people who would normally do the introducing do not know you, and the families who would normally be approached are not sure what to make of a name that is not on anyone’s list.

That is the gap these evenings exist to close. You apply directly. A person reads what you wrote. Compatibility is checked across the whole list before invitations go out. Nobody needs to vouch for you first.

On having no wali

If you are a revert sister without a Muslim guardian, you are not shut out. Come on your own, or bring a Muslim friend or a sister from your community as your guardian for the evening – one per guest. If you would rather talk it through before applying, ask us and a person will answer. This comes up often enough that it is not an awkward question.

Who is usually in the room

Reverts

  • Recent shahada and twenty years in
  • English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh backgrounds
  • Caribbean, African and East Asian backgrounds
  • People who converted before marriage, and after a divorce
  • Single parents, welcomed openly

Born Muslims who apply here

  • People who state plainly that heritage is not a filter for them
  • Families who have already discussed it and agree
  • Guests from every community we serve

What people are looking for

  • Marriage, without being treated as a project
  • Someone patient with a deen that is still growing
  • A family that will accept them properly
  • To be asked about who they are, not only when they converted

What we ask of everyone who applies here

  • Come open. If cultural background is a hard requirement for you, this is not the right event – and there are others that will suit you better.
  • Be honest about practice. The form asks where you are, not where you think you should be. Matching works from the truthful answer.
  • Expect the same process as everyone else. The application, the review and the matching do not change because you are a revert. You are not a separate category once you are in the room.

How the evening runs

  • You apply. Around ten minutes. Practice, background, work, and what you are looking for.
  • A person reads it. Every application individually, free-text box included.
  • Matching runs once. After registration closes, the whole list is matched together on age, location, practice, education, profession and stated preferences.
  • Invitations go out. Venue and timings by email. Numbers are kept even between men and women.
  • On the night. Supervised, structured introductions, with a guardian lounge for anyone who brought one.

Questions about these events

I reverted very recently. Is it too soon?

There is no minimum. The form asks about your practice and prayer as they are now, and matching works from that. Plenty of guests are in their first year.

I do not have a wali. Can I still attend?

Yes. You may come alone, or bring a Muslim friend or a sister from your community as your guardian for the evening. If you want to talk it through first, contact us and a person will answer – this is a common question, not an unusual one.

Will people judge how much I know?

Nobody is quizzed. The introductions are conversations, supervised, with a set structure – there is no test of knowledge and no expectation that you perform. Guests at these events applied knowing who the room is for.

Can born Muslims attend a revert event?

Yes, and it only works because they do. What we ask is that anyone applying to these evenings is genuinely open to marrying a revert – if cultural background is a firm requirement, one of our other events will be a better fit.

I have children from before I reverted.

Say so on the form and it will be read as part of your application. Single parents apply to our events regularly and are matched on the same criteria as everyone else. We also run single parent events when dates are open.
